back McKinley Square Park DPA | Map of Area Status: Legal Mixed-Use Off-leash Area Location: Enter where San Bruno Ave. ends at 20th Street on Potrero Hill. Parking: Street parking only. Description: A pleasant, tiny neighborhood park. A good number of friendly park users can be found on the not-legally off-leash grassy upper lawn area. The City has refurbished the upper area and children's play area, while off-leash dogs are now allowed only on the unimproved, very steep trails on the western slope that overlook Highway 101. Beware -- broken glass, and trash from homeless encampments are common. Foxtails are a problem in the late Spring. Dolores Park DPA | Map of Area | Advocacy Group Status: Legal Mixed-Use Off-leash Area Location: Dolores Park is located on the edges of both The Castro and Noe Valley neighborhoods, west of The Mission District, in an area sometimes referred to as "Dolores Heights." It is bounded by 18th Street on the North, 20th Street to the South, Dolores Street to the East and Church Street to the West. Parking: Street parking only. Description: Dolores Park is a large, grassy, gently sloping and sometimes hilly, very mixed-use park - equally popular with dog walkers as with other various park users. Dolores Park has six tennis courts and one basketball court; two soccer fields, a playground, and a clubhouse with public restrooms. Dolores Park has been the neighborhood center for cultural, political and sports activities since the 1960s. Dolores Park remains a popular relaxation and recreation open space for people from all over San Francisco. On warmer days, many people - sunbathe on the hill at the southern end of the park (earning it the nickname "Speedo Ridge" among some locals). Upper Douglass DPA | Map of Area Status: Legal Mixed-Use Off-leash Area Location: Enter at 27th Street and Douglass. Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Parking: Street parking only. Description: This is a great neighborhood DPA that offers a wonderful, grassy place for dogs to play off-leash. Upper Noe Park DPA | Map of Area Status: Legal Fenced Single-use Off-leash Area Location: Enter 30th Street at Church Street (park located inside the block bordered by Day, Sanchez, 30th and Church Streets). Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. - Occasionally locked. Parking: Street parking only. Description: This is a fenced-in, very narrow - so small, it's easy to miss - official Dog Play Area. There is no grass to be found (has bare dirt substrate) and it's so small that most people or dogs cannot experience meaningful/adequate exercise within this area. Bernal Hill DPA | Map of Area | Feature Film | Advocacy Group Status: Legal Mixed-Use Off-leash Area Location: Enter either at the parking lot located at Folsom Street at Bernal Heights Ave or at the end of Bernal Heights Ave where the street dead-ends (on the South side of the hill). Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Parking: Small parking lot on the North side, or street parking at the dead-end on the South side. Description: Bernal Heights is the largest official DPA/off-leash area in San Francisco. The entire hill is rugged, rocky and steep. The park is accessible via narrow, single track trails and are situated so that one can walk for 45 minutes-to-1-hour without retracing steps. Very popular destination location, neighborhood park and with professional dog walkers. There is an abundance of nature (including raptors, a coyote and during the spring, an incredible display of wildflowers) on this hill that coexist perfectly with the off-leash dogs. This park is threatened by the NAP. The NAP plans on closing nearly all the trails, and limiting off-leash use to the paved paths only. Holly Park | Map of Area | Advocacy Group Status: De Facto Mixed-use Off-leash Area Location: Take Mission Street to Appleton and you will dead-end into Holly Park Circle - a street that encircles this park. Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Parking: Street parking only. Description: This is a grassy, gently sloping, hilly park popular with the locals. For those unable (or uninterested) in hiking up to steep, rugged Bernal Hill, this offers a suitable, safe area for multi-use enjoyment. There is a children's play area and tennis courts. This park was denied an offical DPA once, but is trying again to get DPA here. Saint Mary's Park DPA | Map of Area Status: Legal Fenced Single-use Off-leash Area Location: Enter Murray St & Justin Dr. Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. - Frequently closed/locked and inacessible during rain or wet seasons. Parking: Street parking only. Description: This is a fenced-in, small DPA. It has a small grassy area, small paved path and benches. It is frequently closed (locked shut) during rain or wet seasons. McLaren Park DPA | Map of Area Status: Legal Multi-use Off-leash Area Location: Enter at the intersection of Mansell Street and Shelly Drive. The offical DPA is at the top of the hill at Shelly Drive and Mansell Street - exclusive of Sensitive Habitat Areas. Parking: Street parking only. Description: McLaren Park is a beautiful, large, underutilized park that will be impacted by the NAP. Beware of the heavy traffic on Mansell Street and please keep your dog out of the reservoir! This park is bounded by some rough neighborhoods and may be dangerous after dark. McLaren Park DPA | Map of Area Status: Legal Multi-use Off-leash Area Location: Enter at Geneva or Sunnydale. The offical DPA is a South section between the 1600 block of Geneva and the 1600 block of Sunnydale - exclusive of Sensitive Habitat Areas. Parking: Street parking only. Description: McLaren Park is a beautiful, large, underutilized park that will be impacted by the NAP. Please keep your dog out of the reservoir!
