SW Region of San Francisco:
Please refer to the below map and adjoining lists of dog-friendly areas where you and your dog can enjoy some good, healthy off-leash exercise in San Francisco. When visiting any off-leash area, be sure to follow general Petiquette guidelines in order to enjoy these areas responsibly.

Click on the map below for information about open spaces in this part of the city:
Not to scale: Actual off-leash areas are MUCH smaller than they appear in these maps.

Fort Funston GGNRA | Map of Area | Live Webcam | Advocacy Group

Status: Legal Mixed-Use Off-leash Area

Location: Fort Funston is located in San Francisco, south of Ocean Beach. The entrance and large parking lot can only be reached by driving south on Skyline Blvd (Highway 35). Go past the traffic light at John Muir Blvd and up the hill. You'll see a small sign on the right, near the top of the hill. If you get to John Daly Blvd in Daly City - you've gone too far! The upper parking lot is open from sunrise to sunset, but if you park in the smaller lot near John Muir Blvd you can always hike in up the hill. Dogs are permitted off leash under voice control in much of Fort Funston and on Phillip Burton Beach. However, dogs must be on leash in the Bank Swallow habitat areas.

Description: Simply put - Fort Funston is doggie nirvana! There's no better place in the Bay Area for friendly, sociable dogs. This is the best off-leash area in California, if not the USA. Come check it out yourself! With plenty of dunes, trails, wide-open space, ocean, sand, nature, and tons of happy, frolicking dogs - what's not to love?

Ocean Beach GGNRA | Map of Area | Panorama View | Advocacy Group

Status: Legal Mixed-Use Off-leash Area

Location: Dogs are allowed on Ocean Beach under voice control from Stairwell 1 south to Stairwell 21. Dogs must be on leash south of Stairwell 21 to Sloat Boulevard in order to protect the endangered Western Snowy Plover.

Description: Great wide-open space for dogs who live the beach - there's surf and sand aplenty! Ocean Beach is the premier beach in San Francisco stretching about 3.5 miles along the Pacific Ocean from The Cliffhouse near the mouth of San Francisco Bay south to Fort Funston. Part of the GGNRA, Ocean Beach receives more than 100,000 visitors per year and is the city's largest beach, defining the entire Western edge of the city. One can walk south unimpeded (at low tide) all the way to San Mateo County. Ocean Beach is a long, flat and very heavily used recreational area; popular with every type of user, including kite flyers, runners, surfers and walkers. Watch out for hot embers (leftover from beach bonfires) and trash when walking there with your dog.

Pine Lake/Stern Grove DPA | Map of Area

Status: Legal Mixed-Use Off-leash Area

Location: Enter at Crestlake Drive & Wawona Street. Keep dogs out of the marsh/"lake"! The off-leash area is the grassy field East of the lake area, North side, along Wawona Street between 21st and 23rd avenues. Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Parking: There is an actual parking lot with plenty of parking inside the park!

Description: This is a great neighborhood/destination DPA that offers a wonderful place for dogs to play off-leash. The majority of the park is protected by steep hillsides with lots of trees which back into housing/backyards. Great for windy days, the trees and topography offer protection from wind - making this a perfect place to go when Fort Funston is too chilly/cold. The meadow area is large, flat, and grassy (with lots of gophers!). There are some limited trails on the hillsides and around the "lake"/marsh.

Mt. Davidson Park | Map of Area | Photos

Status: De Facto Mixed-use Off-leash Area

Location: Access via Dalewood Way at Lansdale Ave - or any street that directly adjacent to the park. Somewhat difficult to find unless you are familiar with this area. Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Parking: There is plenty of street parking in this quiet, residential neighborhood.

Description: This park is a sparsely used, heavily wooded, has incredible views from the top and wonderful trails throughout. Reminds us of what Buena Vista Park was like before the NAP removed nearly all the vegetation there. The NAP has already removed trees here and is redeveloping the park under the guise of "restoration". This is not an official DPA, yet is a great place to walk dogs off-leash. This would be a good park to go before the DAC for a DPA.

Lake Merced DPA | Map of Area

Status: Legal Mixed-Use Off-leash Area

Location: Northlake area of Middlefield Drive at Lake Merced Blvd. Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m.

Description: This is an official DPA, yet barely used. It is risky to use with the nearby heavy, high speed traffic, and is it not large enough for adequate off-leash play.

Glen Park | Map of Area
Status: De Facto Mixed-use Off-leash Area

Location: Enter at Bosworth at O'Shaughnessy Blvd. Open daily 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Parking: Street parking only - very limited.

Description: This is a very large, natural canyon. Glen Park is a well used neighborhood park and destination location, with wonderful trails throughout. The NAP has already removed trees here and is redeveloping the park under the guise of "restoration". This is not an official DPA, yet is a great place to walk dogs off-leash. This would be a good park to go before the DAC for a DPA. Please keep dogs out of the newly planted areas and seasonal "creek".

Please be respectful of other park users, and keep your dog under excellent voice control while enjoying these areas with your dog(s).
