Please refer to the below map and adjoining lists of dog-friendly areas where you and your dog can enjoy some good, healthy off-leash exercise in San Francisco. When visiting any off-leash area, be sure to follow general Petiquette guidelines in order to enjoy these areas responsibly.

There are two different types of parks and open spaces in San Francisco. City Parks are owned by the city/county of San Francisco and managed by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. Recreational Areas include all of the city's beaches and former military bases, are part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, and owned/managed by the Federal Government. Federally Managed, Golden Gate National Recreation Areas:
To download the GGNRA's 1979 Pet Policy which lists all official off-leash/voice-control areas - click here. Recent court rulings uphold the 1979 Pet Policy designations. These traditional off-leash/voice control areas are currently undergoing Negotiated Rulemaking. To get reliable historical and current information regarding the status of these areas, please refer to either the Ocean Beach Dog, or the Fort Funston Dog Walkers Association websites. Public hearings and public comment periods are in the pipeline for this process - so please prepare to defend and support these wonderful off-leash areas in the near future.
